Once you know the rules, the fun of Sudoku is getting faster and tackling harder puzzles. The good news: solving isn't about being a genius — it's about knowing a handful of techniques. Here are the Sudoku tips and tricks that take you from beginner to confident solver.
New to the game? Start with how to play Sudoku.
1. Scan before you write
Before filling anything in, scan each row, column and box for numbers that are almost complete. This "cross-hatching" often reveals cells where only one number can go — the fastest way to make progress.
2. Look for the "lone single"
If a cell has only one possible number left (because the other eight already appear in its row, column or box), fill it in. Hunting these down clears easy puzzles quickly.
3. Use pencil marks
For tougher puzzles, note every possible number in each empty cell. As you place numbers elsewhere, cross candidates off. Pencil marks turn a confusing grid into a solvable one.
4. Spot naked pairs
If two cells in the same row, column or box can only hold the same two numbers, those numbers can't appear anywhere else in that unit. Eliminate them from other cells to open up new placements.
5. Try the "pointing pair"
When a candidate number in a box is limited to a single row or column, you can remove it from that row or column outside the box. It's a powerful step for medium and hard puzzles.
6. Work the hardest area
Focus where the grid is most filled in — those rows, columns and boxes have the fewest possibilities, so they crack first and open up the rest.
Habits that make you faster
- Never guess. Every valid Sudoku is solvable by logic alone.
- Stay tidy with pencil marks — update them the moment you place a number.
- Practice daily. Speed comes from pattern recognition, and that only grows with reps.
